The two-year multidisciplinary Master of Conservation course, with specialisations in Decorative Architectural Surfaces, Easel Paintings, or Stone, will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to become a professional hands-on conservator, as well as the academic title necessary to become a warranted conservator in Malta. After completing the course, you will be capable of critical thinking and constructive discussion and collaboration with different professionals in the framework of a multidisciplinary team, and you will be able to take and implement conservation decisions to the practical and ethical highest level.
The programme contains an equal balance of theoretical and practical subjects, delivered over both academic years and during summer placements. You will gain experience with a broad range of conservation materials and treatments, advanced methods of scientific materials testing and analysis, as well as the practical conservation of real artwork undertaken in an atelier and/or through fieldwork. A dissertation is undertaken in the final year of the course.
The Master of Conservation is open to students who have completed the University of Malta’s Preparatory Programme in Conservation or other relevant undergraduate or graduate degree in Conservation.
a Bachelor’s degree in Conservation Studies from this University obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or
a Bachelor's degree comprising not less than 180 ECTS credits and obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in a discipline related to Archaeology, Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Conservation and Restoration, Engineering, Fine Art, History of Art or Physics or
qualifications deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be comparable to the qualification listed in paragraph (a).
Applicants admitted under paragraph (b) and, if necessary, (c) shall be required to successfully complete a Preparatory Programme comprising 60 ECTS credits, with an overall average mark of 65% or better, prior to their registration as regular students on the Course. Prior to their acceptance on the Preparatory programme such applicants must also obtain a mark of at least 60% in a test or tests as established by the Board. The test/s shall be held not later than one month before the start of the Course.

Upon successfully completing the Master's course, you will be able to:
Demonstrate that you have a clear understanding of what the practice of the conservation of cultural heritage entails. Discussions, seminars, presentations will regularly take place, and reports will be produced. Formal and informal presentations to professionals working in conservation or a related field as well as to non-conservation heritage and other stakeholders (e.g. sponsors) will be a regular of the course, where the subject knowledge and understanding will be clearly demonstrated.
Evaluate and critically apply a variety of methods for examination, analysis, documentation and conservation of materials relevant to their field.
Design, develop, evaluate and follow through conservation treatment(s), according to the physical history of the decorated surface, its original materials and techniques, its state of conservation, keeping a critical eye on changes that may need to be made along the way.
Plan a strategy for the continued care and maintenance of the documented and/or treated decorated surface/object or site, and follow through this programme.
Assess courses of action regarding the conservation of cultural heritage with a critical and ethical approach, especially when faced with particularly complex problems and/or unpredictable situations.
Dissect the different stages of an intervention, critically reflecting on conservation practice, including your own.
